A Gold-Tone Cocktail Ring Built Around a Step-Cut Red Crystal

The centre stone is rectangular and step cut, with broad flat facets that give a deep even red rather than a scattered sparkle, and it is raised on a gold-tone gallery so it stands clear of the band. Two lines of small clear stones run along the top of each shoulder, and below them a row of tiny square red stones follows the side of the band.

The flanks of the shank are cut away into openwork scrollwork, which drops the weight and gives the ring the look of an older piece. It is broad enough to be worn on its own with an evening dress and reads well in low light, which is where a warm red stone tends to do its best work.
