A Round Talisman Pendant Carved With a Sun and a Four-Way Knot

The disc is worked in three rings. At the centre four crescents interlace into a closed knot; around that sit the flame-shaped rays of a sun, each one carved separately so none quite matches its neighbour; and the outer band is filled with angular fretwork in the old northern manner. The whole face is darkened and then rubbed back, so the raised lines catch and the recesses stay black.

It hangs from a thick braided cord rather than a chain, which suits the weight of the disc and sits well over a jumper or an open collar. The piece is unisex and heavy enough to feel like an object rather than a trinket, which makes it an easy gift for a brother, a partner or a father.
